Foam
Brain Activity Model
The Brain
Web
Price: $21.95
About the Model: This colorful teaching model
was designed specifically for hands-on use with young children. The
model is made of resilient, non-toxic, damage-proof foam. Students can
remove and manipulate the brain pieces to explore the organization and
function of the brain. Removable pieces stimulate problem-solving skills,
develop small motor skills, and stimulate interest in brain gross anatomy.
Removable pieces include the meningeal area (blue) neocortex (yellow) cerebellum
(red) brainstem and spinal cord (orange) hypothalamus (green) and spinal
column (white).
Every model is accompanied by an excellent reproducible
black-line master activity card. The left activity card presents
a complete line drawing of a multipolar neuron, and the right card presents
a master for regional coloring. There are dozens of ways to use the
masters -- use as lecture/background preparation or for quizzes.
The packet also includes 10 well conceived "extension activities" that
allow the teacher to prepare fun activities for student groups or individual
projects...

The
Brain
By Seymour
Simon
Grades
2 through 8 and up
Web
Price: $14.95
Did you know that your brain is roughly the size of a large
grapefruit? Award-winning author Seymour Simon clearly and skillfully exposes
the many wonders of the brain and nervous system in The Brain:
Our Nervous System. Author of more than 150 children's books
about science, including The Heart: Our Circulatory System, Muscles: Our
Muscular System, and Bones: Our Skeletal System, Simon has a knack
for piquing the curiosity of youngsters and clearly communicating scientific
facts. The Brain, written for ages 8 and older, is a solid launching
pad for further investigation of the organ that makes us who we are. Kids
love learning that our brains grow dramatically until we are about 7 years
old, that our spines have 33 vertebrae, and that our skulls are made of
28 bones. Large, full-color photographs and illustrations show the
fascinating areas of the human brain--a positron emission tomography (PET)
photo, for example, shows the dramatically different levels of visual stimulation
to the brain when your eyes are open or closed. Two to three paragraphs
of large type per page, plus one full-color illustration per spread, help
make The Brain just the right amount of information for one grapefruit-sized
brain to take in. Hardcover.

Brainy Pencil Toppers
Web Price $4.95/10
pcs
Ok, let's talk about pencils for a minute.
Good while they have erasers on one end; pretty much worthless when they
don't. You have a couple of options. Either get the pyramidal-shaped
replacements like all the geeks have, or use the stylish pencil topper
shown at the left. As you use the brainy topper/eraser it erodes
without a lot of dust, and better yet, it begins to resemble the neocortical
pathology indicative of Alzheimer's or Picks disease. The toppers
are sold in bags of 10 pieces in assorted colors. Our lawyer has
informed us that these toppers can be a choking hazard for young children,
so, if you have an orally fixated kid (or if you're orally fixated yourself)
you're on your own...

The
Growing Brain
Grades
Pre - 8
Web
Price: $3.95
This is a fun product that allows anyone to "grow"
a brain. When you remove the brain from the package it measures about
1.5" square. To "grow" the brain it is placed in room temperature
water and allowed to expand. Over the course of about 48-96 hours
the brain takes the approximate shape and size of a real human brain.
It also has a slightly "slick" tactile feeling that kids love. The
hydrated brains can take a lot of abuse, so teachers don't have to worry
about these brains falling apart during activity periods. If you
hydrate it in a water solution that has food coloring, it can be tinted
(we did red, of course...). The hydrated non-toxic brain can then
be left in a jar, or allowed to dry again. When it is allowed dry
the brain shrinks to its original compressed size.
The "growing brain" is a great classroom project, because
kids love to keep track of its growth. It's even great out of the
classroom...For instance; these expanded brains look fantastic on the kitchen
window sill or in a Mason jar on your desk. You can label the jars
"Student that got caught cheating...",
or something similar.
The package has a fact sheet with "Incredible Brain
Facts" (did you know that different kinds of experiences change the brain
physically? -- Brain Fact #4). In addition to the listing of
facts, the package illustrates the location of the hindbrain, midbrain,
and forebrain. Use room temperature water only to grow your brain...
